Welcome to the Dauntless Aviation Glossary!
At Dauntless, our editorial staff maintains the web's largest unified glossary of aviation terms. This glossary is built from a combination of official, quasi-official,
and proprietary sources (including original material that we develop oursselves). Uniquely, we often provide multiple definitions of a given term so that you can find that which best applies
to you. In order to maximize your learning efficiency, this glossary (and similar ones for our international users) is incresingly fully integrated into our aviation learning apps, including
our FAA written test prep and FAA practical test prep software and apps. If you like this glossary,
you'll love them with their polished learning environments and world's best and clearest content (please do give them a try.).

Transponder
Transponder | | an airborne receiver-transmitter designed to aid air traffic control personnel in tracking aircraft during flight. | source: FAA Acceptable Methods - Aircraft Inspection and Repair (AC 43.13-1B) |
| | The airborne portion of the secondary surveillance radar system. The transponder emits a reply when queried by a radar facility. | source: FAA Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3A) |
| | The ground-based surveillance radar beacon transmitter-receiver, which normally scans in synchronism with a primary radar, transmitting discrete radio signals which repetitiously request all transponders on the mode being used to reply. The replies received are mixed with the primary radar returns and displayed on the same plan position indicator (radar scope). Also, applied to the airborne element of the TACAN/DME system. | source: FAA Pilot/Controller Glossary |
| | Activate specific modes/codes/functions on the aircraft transponder; e.g., "Squawk three/alpha, two one zero five, low." | source: FAA Pilot/Controller Glossary |
| | The airborne radar beacon receiver/transmitter portion of the Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS) which automatically receives radio signals from interrogators on the ground, and selectively replies with a specific reply pulse or pulse group only to those interrogations being received on the mode to which it is set to respond. (See INTERROGATOR.) (See TRANSPONDER.) A receiver/transmitter which will generate a reply signal upon proper interrogation; the interrogation and reply being on different frequencies. | source: FAA Pilot/Controller Glossary |
| | Transponder: The airborne portion of the ATC radar beacon system. | source: FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25A) |
| | The airborne portion of the secondary surveillance radar system. The transponder emits a reply when queried by a radar facility. | source: FAA Weight Shift Control Handbook (FAA-H-8083-5) |
| | a radio device which when triggered sends out a pre-coded reply on the same wavelength. ATC allocates Modes A and B four-digit numbers to provide aircraft identification. Mode C gives autoreading from the encoding altimeter | source: ICAO English Pro Aviation Glossary |
| | A radio or radar transceiver that transmits some signal in response to receiving a predetermined signal. | source: Wikitionary / Wikipedia and Related Sources (Edited) |
