Minimum Descent Altitude
Minimum Descent Altitude
Minimum descent altitude (MDA) is the lowest altitude specified in an instrument approach procedure, expressed in feet above mean sea level, to which descent is authorized on final approach or during circle-to-land maneuvering until the pilot sees the required visual references for the heliport or runway of intended landing.

Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA): The lowest altitude (in feet MSL) to which descent is authorized on final approach, or during circle-to-land maneuvering in execution of a non-precision approach.

MINIMUM DESCENT ALTITUDE (MDA):
  • ICAO: A specified altitude in a non-precision approach or circling approach below which descent may not be made without visual reference.
  • USA/FAA: The lowest altitude, expressed in feet above mean sea level, to which descent is authorized on final approach or during circle-to-land maneuvering in execution of a standard instrument approach procedure where no electronic glide slope is provided.

MDA: the altitude in the terminal area (around the airport) below which no aircraft must descend unless it is on its approach path. In some airports, the MDA will be different in different directions depending on the terrain
