Welcome to the Dauntless Aviation Glossary!
At Dauntless, our editorial staff maintains the web's largest unified glossary of aviation terms. This glossary is built from a combination of official, quasi-official,
and proprietary sources (including original material that we develop oursselves). Uniquely, we often provide multiple definitions of a given term so that you can find that which best applies
to you. In order to maximize your learning efficiency, this glossary (and similar ones for our international users) is incresingly fully integrated into our aviation learning apps, including
our FAA written test prep and FAA practical test prep software and apps. If you like this glossary,
you'll love them with their polished learning environments and world's best and clearest content (please do give them a try.).

Indicated-airspeed
Indicated-airspeed | | A direct instrument reading obtained from an air speed indicator uncorrected for altitude, temperature, atmospheric density, or instrument error. | source: FAA Aerosense Glossary |
| | Indicated Airspeed (IAS): The direct instrument reading obtained from the airspeed indicator, uncorrected for variations in atmospheric density, installation error, or instrument error. Manufacturers use this airspeed as the basis for determining airplane performance. Takeoff, landing, and stall speeds listed in the AFM or POH are indicated airspeeds and do not normally vary with altitude or temperature. | source: FAA Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3A) |
| | The airspeed as shown on an airspeed indicator with no corrections applied. | source: FAA Aviation Maintenance Technician Airframe Handbook (FAA-H-8083-31) |
| | Indicated airspeed means the speed of an aircraft as shown on its pitot static airspeed indicator calibrated to reflect standard atmosphere adiabatic compressible flow at sea level uncorrected for airspeed system errors. | source: FAA Federal Aviation Regulations (CFR 14 Part 1) |
| | The airspeed shown by an airspeed indicator. | source: FAA Flight Navigator's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-18) |
| | Indicated Airspeed (IAS): Airspeed as shown on the dial of the instrument airspeed indicator on an aircraft. Directly related to calibrated airspeed (CAS), IAS includes instrument errors and position error. | source: FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25A) |
| | Indicated airspeed (IAS): The direct instrument reading obtained from the airspeed indicator, uncorrected for variations in atmospheric density, installation error, or instrument error. Manufacturers use this airspeed as the basis for determining airplane performance. Takeoff, landing, and stall speeds listed in the AFM or POH are indicated airspeeds and do not normally vary with altitude or temperature. | source: FAA Weight Shift Control Handbook (FAA-H-8083-5) |
| | IAS: the relative velocity between the aircraft and the surrounding air: the indicated airspeed is displayed on the airspeed scale of the PFD | source: ICAO English Pro Aviation Glossary |
