Aerodrome
Aerodrome | | The name given by Dr. Samuel Langley to the flying machines built under his supervision between the years of 1891 and 1903. | source: FAA Aviation Maintenance Technician Powerplant Handbook (FAA-H-8083-32) |
| | A defined area on land or water (including any buildings, installations and equipment) intended to be used either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure, and movement of aircraft. | source: FAA Pilot/Controller Glossary |
| | any place from which aircraft flight operations take place | source: ICAO English Pro Aviation Glossary |
| | The definition of "aerodrome" varies somewhat from location to location. The following definitions apply in various places: - Any area of land or water used for aircraft operation, regardless of facilities.
- An airfield used for managed aircraft operation, either military or civilian, having such facilities as are necessary for operation.
- An airfield equipped with air traffic control facilities and hangars as well as accommodation for passengers and cargo; an airport.
In some parts of the word, such as the USA, the term is rarely used and may sound anachronistic. Still, most aviation-minded people should generally be aware that the term refers to an aircraft takeoff/landing facility of some sort. An early American aviation pioneer, Samuel Langley, named his early flying machine(s) "aerodrome." The use of the term to mean an actual flying machine, as Langley did, is wholly obsolete. | source: Wikitionary / Wikipedia and Related Sources (Edited) |
