Welcome to the Dauntless Aviation Glossary!
At Dauntless, our editorial staff maintains the web's largest unified glossary of aviation terms. This glossary is built from a combination of official, quasi-official,
and proprietary sources (including original material that we develop oursselves). Uniquely, we often provide multiple definitions of a given term so that you can find that which best applies
to you. In order to maximize your learning efficiency, this glossary (and similar ones for our international users) is incresingly fully integrated into our aviation learning apps, including
our FAA written test prep and FAA practical test prep software and apps. If you like this glossary,
you'll love them with their polished learning environments and world's best and clearest content (please do give them a try.).

Flare
Flare | | A simple maneuver performed moments before landing in which the nose of an aircraft is pitched up to minimize the touchdown rate of speed. | source: FAA Aerosense Glossary |
| | A pitch-up during landing approach to reduce rate of descent and forward speed prior to touchdown. | source: FAA Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3A) |
| | The last flight maneuver by an aircraft in a successful landing, wherein the balloon’s descent is reduced to a path nearly parallel to the landing surface. | source: FAA Balloon Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-11) |
| | A maneuver accomplished prior to landing to slow a helicopter. | source: FAA Helicopter Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-21A) |
| | Roundout (flare): The slow, smooth transition from a normal approach attitude to a landing attitude. This maneuver is accomplished in a WSC by easing forward on the control bar from approach speed as the WSC gets near the ground for landing to reduce the descent rate to zero as the back wheels are inches above the ground, continuing to move the control bar forward reducing speed as the back wheels are inches above the landing surface, and continuing to push the control bar full forward until the back wheels settle to the surface for touchdown. | source: FAA Weight Shift Control Handbook (FAA-H-8083-5) |
| | the final nose-up pitch movement of a landing airplane. The landing flare is a manoeuvre that enables a pilot to reduce an airplane’s vertical speed without applying engine power. | source: ICAO English Pro Aviation Glossary |
| | In solar-terrestrial terms, a sudden eruption of energy on the solar disk lasting minutes to hours, from which radiation and particles are emitted | source: NOAA National Weather Service Glossary |
